The ability to provide food, produce beauty, and record history were considered most valuable in the Mali empire, so famers, fishermen, artisans, and scribes were some of the most celebrated members of society. Established by the great King Sundiata Keita, the Mali Empire ruled West Africa for over 300 years and was one of the richest empires in the history of the world. Known also for its value of education, the Mali Empire is where the scholars in Timbuktu and Gao thrived, and perpetuated a culture of learning for the kingdom.
